For everyone teeth yellowing is a normal part of aging. Our hair turns gray, and our teeth turn yellow. It’s the inner part, dentine that turns yellow. The dentine can be seen through enamel because enamel becomes more translucent as we get older, making the teeth look yellow.
The outer part of the tooth, enamel, can also get stained when you drink tea, coffee, wine, or smoke tobacco. This is called staining, and it does not affect the inner colour of the teeth.
So if you’re considering whitening your teeth make sure you know what you’re doing before jumping in. We can help you decide what works best for you.
At Herne Bay Dental we use genuine dentist-recommended Opalescence products:
Custom Whitening Tray
- Take-home tooth whitening treatments: an ultra thin custom-made tray is created for you. You place a small amount of whitening agent in the tray (you have control of this based on your consultation with the dentist), place the tray in the mouth, and leave it in for 2-3 hours during the day, or overnight if you prefer. The trays are comfortable to wear since they are made specifically for you, are flexible and can be cleaned and used again as required.
- Opalescence Boost: a power whitening gel that provides brighter, whiter teeth after just 40 minutes in the dental chair. The powerful 40% hydrogen peroxide gel is chemically activated, so it doesn’t require a hot, uncomfortable light to work. Every dose of Opalescence Boost is fresh, precisely delivered and effective over two 20-minute applications for a total of 40 minutes of treatment time.
We recommend the take-home whitening in most cases because it is more affordable, safer and you can apply it yourself for customized results. However, some people are better candidates for in-chair tooth whitening procedures. During your consultation we discuss the best method for you, based on your current tooth shade, lifestyle, expectations and any future restorative requirements. We also discuss what you should (or should not) do before and after you undergo the procedure. Some patients are suited and opt for a combination of in-chair whitening and take-home kits, which gives them better and faster results.
Opalescence is made by Ultradent Products Inc. provider of advanced dental solutions, and is sold only to licensed dental professionals.
